Strong Cleaners Celebrates 94 Years in Business
Third-Generation Black-Owned Dry Cleaning & Laundry Business Continues to be a Pittsburgh Institution
Pittsburgh, PA
In April of 2024, Strong Cleaners a full-service, boutique drycleaning & laundry business, will celebrate its 94th year in business, spanning three generations. Strong Cleaners is proud to call Pittsburgh’s Homewood home base for its processing and customer service operations. Over the last 10 years, the company has restructured organizationally under the leadership of Justin Strong, expanding its presence with an independently owned drop store in Downtown Pittsburgh (2015), an express site in Avalon, PA at Old Flame Mending (2023), and an overall focus on its Pick Up & Delivery Services via its user-friendly app. Originally established in 1930 in Shelby, NC, by Justin’s Grandfather, Dennis Strong, it relocated to the Pittsburgh area in 1942 (Homestead) and eventually established itself in Braddock, PA as a premier Black-owned dry cleaning plant in all of Southwestern Pennsylvania. In 1987, Eric Strong (Justin’s father), took over the business, after being laid off from US Steel because of the region’s steel industry collapse. In 1992, Eric bought out one of the few remaining Black-Owned dry cleaners, Trowers Cleaners, and moved operations to Homewood. In 2014, Justin took over the family business after making a name for himself in the city’s culture & nightlife scene as the founder and co-owner of the iconic Shadow Lounge & AVA (2000-2013). Using his understanding of hospitality, the company moved forward with a focus on customer service & technology while maintaining the level of quality the Strong brand has earned over the decades. As other competitors have closed up shop since Covid, Strong Cleaners continues to look for opportunities to expand and maximize its production capacity. “The future of the company was definitely up in the air at the beginning of Covid,” says Justin Strong. “Through the many government grants and lending programs, we were able to find our ground, assess the direction of the industry, and made intentional decisions to pivot, which has placed us in an exciting position in 2024.” Justin adds, “The Strong name knows how to navigate adversity. Rather it’s the segregated South, being laid off, or gentrification…we know how to survive and thrive.”
